New Zealand Round Up
Welcome to the first NZ round up of 2025! It feels odd saying the first one of 2025, as I am writing this in mid-March and the memories of the summer holidays are but a distant memory. The weather for the last few months has been hot and dry with very little rain days managing to put any dampener on the volume of works being undertaken.
The IECA Australasia annual conference was held in October last year in Queenstown. General sentiment (including mine) was that the conference was a great success! You couldn’t ask for a better region to showcase some of New Zealand’s beauty and Queenstown put it on for us. The field tour at this conference was very different to previous conferences as we did not go to an active construction site but rather the Gibbston Valley Winery, which sounds like just an excuse to enjoy a few drinks. I found this very interesting (not just for the wine) as the guides had extensive knowledge of the soils of the region, not necessarily particularly worried about erosion but primarily around soil parameters that make an excellent grape growing medium. How Soil Properties Influence Mud Removal from Tyres
By Karina Lenko; Christina N. Kranz, Ph.D.; Richard A. McLaughlin, Ph.D.; Joshua L. Heitman, Ph.D.
One of the most common sediment management problems on construction sites is mud deposited on roads by vehicles, commonly referred to as “track-out,” as they leave the site. The most common practice to prevent track-out is a construction site driveway consisting of large rock that is supposed to knock the mud off the tires, though little research exists on how effective these exits are. In recent years, an increasing number of reusable track-out prevention methods have been created and marketed as a better, more sustainable alternative to the stabilized construction exit. These products can be easily cleared of the sediment they collect, unlike the stone exits, which require either top dressing with additional stone or removal and replacement of stone for maintenance.
Research Objectives
This research aimed to determine the efficacy of three track-out prevention systems as affected by differing soil properties. Read more ...

Insights and Highlights from the IECA Annual Conference 2025 – Jess Griffiths
By Jess Griffiths, Senior Environmental Advisor, HEB Construction
In late February this year, I had the incredible opportunity to attend the IECA Annual Conference held in Richmond, Virginia. This event brought together professionals from all aspects of the erosion and stormwater industries, all eager to share their knowledge and insights.
The keynote speech delivered by Dr Jeremy Scott-Hoffman was a fantastic introduction to the Richmond area and a timely reminder of why those of us in the environmental field do what we do. The sessions that followed were similarly high-calibre, with speakers from all backgrounds: contractors, consultants, state and city officials, researchers, and students. A particular highlight for me was the session delivered by Leela O’Dea about the use of bubble curtains for silt and sound attenuation during water works. Read More...

Celebrating Collaboration and Innovation in Soil and Water Conservation.
In the world of soil and water conservation, innovation, and collaboration, one of the IECA Global’s most cherished traditions is a surprising—and stylish—one: The Tie That Binds Us. This tradition is about more than passing along a piece of fabric—it’s about the spirit of collaboration and dedication to the industry of those who have shaped the IECA. Although it is light-hearted, it is a reminder of the serious collaborative work we do together. IECA Australasia is very proud to have had a number of our Chapter members honoured by receiving The Tie That Binds Us, starting with Doug Wimble – 2001, Colin Schiller – 2019, Andrew Macleod – 2021 and Joe Johnson – 2025.
The Australasian Chapter decided to bring this tradition closer to home and has introduced the tradition of passing on the Akubra hat. The Akubra hat was chosen because it is an iconic symbol of resilience, adventure, community and heritage—the legendary hat of the true explorer. Read More...
