A certification program that identifies suitably qualified professionals in the field of erosion and sediment control has been developed by the Australasian Chapter of the International Erosion Control Association (IECA ()).Australasia)).  It is the Certified Professional in Erosion and Sediment Control (CPESC) program, administered and overseen by CPESC Inc in the ) United States .  IECA (Australasia) works with CPESC Inc in ensuring the CPESC program meets Australian needs.  IECA is a non profit, member organisation dedicated to providing resource information for a broad spectrum of erosion and sediment control topics.

IECA acts as a sponsor of the CPESC program and offers specialised training that can help applicants achieve certification. Once certification has been achieved, IECA can help CPESCs maintain their skills and meet continuing education requirements through its conference and trade expositions, professional development training courses and other useful resources.

Certified professionals:

(a) must meet set educational and practical experience standards,
(b) must subscribe to a code of ethics,
(c) must be qualified for particular identification of special abilities, and
(d) must have passed a qualifying examination.

An Australian Application Review Committee (ARC) judges the credentials of each applicant for certification. All decisions of the ARC pertaining to eligibility for certification and inclusion on the registry must be considered final after due provision for an appeal.

The program has been developed in Australia because the public demands evidence of professional competence from persons whose activities affect the physical and economic well being of the nation. Already, this need has been recognised in such professions as medicine, law and engineering. Laws governing the misuse of land and water resources and damages inflicted on others by poor erosion and sediment control technologies and systems have been passed in all states of Australia . These laws create a need for the services of professionals trained in proper erosion and sediment control methods. Such professionals increasingly must be able to show evidence of their qualifications.  The CPESC program is an excellent forum to achieve this.

Given its relatively short life, the CPESC program is proving very successful in Australia , especially in NSW and Queensland . It has proven so successful that IECA (Australasia) expects that there will be a requirement that all people who prepare or review plans for erosion and sediment control in these states will be certified under the program. Most other States in Australia and, maybe, New Zealand will probably follow this lead.

The CPESC program started in the United States . In Australia , a subcommittee of IECA (), Australasia ), consisting of Michael Frankcombe , Rick Morse and Tony King , undertook development of the program. This occurred in close consultation with the CPESC Inc. The committee has made sure that the version of the program available here properly represents Australian needs
