Field Tour #1: Sunshine Coast Councils RESET site.
The RESET site is a purpose-built erosion and sediment control (ESC) education facility. It was designed and constructed by Sunshine Coast Council in June 2021, thanks to funding from the Environment Levy.
The RESET site supports research, education, and innovation by demonstrating current ESC practices, products, and techniques. Its primary goal is to enhance skills and knowledge within Sunshine Coast Council and across the industry.
The RESET Site is another example of achieving Sunshine Coast Council's vision to become Australia's most sustainable region: Healthy. Smart. Creative.
The site features
- 10 rainfall simulated erosion and sediment trial bays
- five batter slopes
- more than 200 metres of drainage channels
- a High Efficiency Sediment Basin
- material stockpiles
- a mock house site.
The visit will give you the opportunity to view all these features and hear from Sunshine Coast Staff, how they secured funding to develop the site, and the partnerships they now have to help educate those in the industry doing the hands-on work to ensure the sustainability of the region. Some of the contractors and suppliers involved in the site will also be on hand to discuss their products.
Field Tour #2: The Aura Development
Aura is a master planned community on 2,400 ha located 2 km south-west of Caloundra on the Sunshine Coast, Queensland. The nature of this development is on a mega scale, and on a timeframe that is estimated to be thirty years before it is completed in its entirety. The site is traversed by three waterways, which flow into Pumicestone Passage, part of the Moreton Bay Ramsar site. The local, and regional environments surrounding Aura contains listed threatened species, habitats, and listed migratory species.
Aura is the first urban development of this scale and size in Australia. The development is changing the views of the industry by demonstrating that urban development can occur with minimal impacts on sensitive catchments. Unique features of the Aura development are the industry-leading management and control of stormwater runoff, and the management of the federally listed Wallum Sedgefrog.
You will have the opportunity to:
- Look at active HES basins.
- Gain an understanding of the overall project and strict WQ limits they need to achieve.
- Hear how basin construction and operation have evolved onsite, the typical performance they get for a range of rain events.
- Look at completed bio basins.
- View wetlands and frog habitat areas which provide a WQ function post-civil construction stage.
- Hear about the function of bio basins and other key points including design and construction.
